DATA ASSURANCE
About, methodology & limitations
PurposeTravel supports travel planning and in-country awareness. It does not replace government, emergency-service, airline, medical or professional security advice.
Confidence classificationConfidence describes provenance and automatic corroboration—not certainty or an analyst judgement.
OFFICIALDirect machine-readable government or agency information.
HIGHAutomatically matched reporting from at least two established independent outlets. Human verification is still required.
MEDIUMOne established outlet, or at least two independent attributed open sources.
LOWOne attributed open-source report without independent corroboration.
FreshnessVery fresh: 0–6 hours. Fresh: over 6–24 hours. Recent: over 24–72 hours. Stale: over 72 hours. Publication time and retrieval time are separate where available.
Operational priorityPriority is separate from confidence. Automated weights are: security +5; civil unrest +4; aviation, border or maritime +3; natural hazard, infrastructure or travel disruption +2. A prominent item may still be low-confidence.
Automated tagging and QAGlobal stories use whole-word and phrase rules. Labour strikes and cancellations are classified as travel disruption, while military strikes require security context. Regression checks run with the feed, but ambiguous names, language and context can still produce false positives or missed items.
Primary sourcesUSGS seismic data, NASA EONET hazards, Met Office NSWWS warnings, FCDO travel advice, Environment Agency flood warnings and US National Weather Service alerts are treated as official feeds. Open-source reporting remains clearly attributed.
Local place safetyNearby hospitals, airports, transport, embassies, police and fire locations come from OpenStreetMap/Overpass with Nominatim category fallback. They are community-mapped—not operationally verified. Travel requires a warning acknowledgement before opening directions.
Provider stateEvery local picture distinguishes Live, Partial, Fallback, Stale, Offline and Unavailable providers. A connected provider remains live when it reports zero current items; zero is never treated as a failed feed.
Around this locationSignals are ranked using source class, geographic scope, freshness, travel-impact terms and distance where coordinates exist. Contextual reports without precise coordinates are labelled as wider-area context. The ranking supports triage and is not a prediction or threat assessment.
Watch change detectionManual live checks compare each watched location with its last acknowledged on-device baseline. Travel flags new reporting, new hazards within 250 km, official-advice changes and provider degradation or recovery. Disappearing reports are not described as resolved, and failed, cached or offline checks do not create changes.
Cached local pictureThe installable PWA and saved snapshots can reopen without connectivity after a successful visit. Live feeds, uncached map tiles, directions and fresh local data still require a network connection.
Privacy and issue reportsSelected coordinates may be sent to geodata providers for the requested local picture. Watch locations and snapshots remain on this device. A data-quality report is sent centrally only after consent; map coordinates are excluded unless you explicitly include them.
AlertsCritical Web Push alerts are available on supported browsers. On iPhone/iPad, install Travel to the Home Screen first. Alerts are deliberately limited to high-priority developments and major seismic events.
